UK vehicle production down 24.3% in August
25th September 2006
Commercial vehicle output in August totalled 8,746 units, representing a 19.0% drop year on year, while YTD CV output of 130,185 units was 3.7% down on the same period of 2005. Export production represented 4,363 units or 49.9% of UK CV output in August, and 85,239 units or 65.5% of CV production from January to August. For the eight months to August, exports represented 74.5% of total UK vehicle production of 1,120,491 units.
“While August car production was lower this year than in 2005, the car industry has been boosted by recent announcements from Nissan and BMW, both of which have made commitments to UK plant investment', said Christopher Macgowan, SMMT chief executive.
“This is not only testament to the skills and abilities of the UK manufacturing workforce, but it will help support the supply of large-scale components from British-based companies.”
On CV production figures, he commented, “Production for export shows an encouraging trend, fuelled by demand on the mainland. Production for the UK has dropped a little this year, following some industrial restructuring. Overall, the outlook is good both in the UK and mainland Europe.”
