2009 Formula Student attracts strong interest

23rd January 2009

The UK’s Institution of Mechanical Engineers received 88 entries for the 2009 staging of its Formula Student collegiate racecar design competition in the first two hours after registration opened on January 20.

The event, which takes place on July 16-19, will again be held at the Silverstone race circuit near Northampton. Entries have been registered from teams of students representing universities in India, Romania, Iran, Canada, Sweden, Switzerland, Germany, France, Austria, Italy, Portugal, Finland and Spain as well as more than 20 teams from UK universities.

Last year – for the first time in the competition’s 12 year history – FS launched Class 1A, challenging students to design and build alternative fuelled cars, using power sources such as hydrogen and hybrid. Three teams entered the category, which was won by Hertfordshire University and five teams have registered for 2009.

John Wood, the chairman of FS and deputy president of the IMechE said, “Everybody is aware that these are difficult times in the economic cycle and the need to develop excellent engineers has never been more important. Formula Student is unique in that it offers students the chance to hone their skills in an exciting and stimulating environment.”
