ACEA rejects Toyota’s application to join
13th June 2006
Toyota’s application to join the European Association of Automobile Manufacturers (ACEA) was rejected last Thursday, report various media, though neither the ACEA nor the company has issued a formal statement on the matter.
Toyota reportedly hoped to influence the ACEA's lobbying on tariffs; its membership of European and US-owned car and truck makers supports maintaining a 10% EU import duty on built up cars, including Toyota’s EU imports, until other countries drop their own tariff barriers.
Toyota had presented itself as a thoroughly European manufacturer, with its R&D activities and assembly plants in the UK, France and its JV with PSA in the Czech Republic employing some 20,000 people.
