Fresh job losses reported at TRW Automotive in Pontypool
9th November 2006
TRW Automotive is to cut 128 jobs at its brake components factory in Pontypool, South Wales, it was reported yesterday, though neither the firm itself nor its unions had issued statements on 8 November. The company’s UK subsidiary currently employs about 500 at its Pontypool plant, of whom 128 - 103 in manufacturing jobs and 25 in support roles - are said to be facing redundancy, voluntary or compulsory. The job losses are to follow the end of a contract next February to supply brake components for Toyota’s Corolla, which accounts for about a quarter of the plant’s output.
TRW Automotive announced its $75m contract win to supply the full
foundation brake system for the outgoing UK-built Toyota Corolla in 2002, which brought TRW's annual sales for braking products to approximately $1.5 billion.
TRW Automotive confirmed in August last year that 156 of 638 jobs would be cut over the following year. The company mounted a share issue this week to part-finance its purchase of shares in the company still held by the aerospace company Northrop Grumman Corp.
