MOT risk assessment criteria published

8th July 2008

‘MOT testing stations will be able to achieve even better results in their risk assessments, now that the criteria for appraisal has finally been made public,’ according to Stephen Coles, Head of MOT Operations for the Retail Motor Industry Federation (RMIF).

Coles’ comments followed a decision by the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) to release information regarding how MOT stations were evaluated during the recent round of Vehicle Testing Station (VTS) risk assessments.

Although VOSA published a best practice guide with general principles, they had not previously released details of how they calculated the risk score. This information has now been added to the Transport Office website and includes a copy of the check list used and a risk scoring reference guide.

Coles continues: ‘The RMIF applauds the fact that this information is in the public domain. This will aid MOT stations and organisations such as ourselves who provide external quality support to better improve VTS ratings and hence test quality.’

Coles adds: ‘Without doubt this is valuable and beneficial information for test stations to have. Just imagine how much more VOSA would have helped to improve the MOT quality if it had been made available to test stations prior to the assessment process.’

The web link for this information is www.transportoffice.gov.uk then chose MOT Garages and Testers, and then MOT Enforcement Transformation.

RMIF member garages that require more information should contact the RMIF MOT Operations Team.
