UAW ‘lost nearly 20,000 members in 2006’

3rd April 2007

The German newspaper Die Welt reported yesterday that the United Auto Workers union in the U.S. had lost 18,651 of its members last year, bringing the total attrition of its membership to 116,000 since 2004. By the end of 2006, the UAW had 538,448 members, compared with about 1.5 million at the end of the 1970s.

The union's executive last year requested funds to mount recruitment drives outside its declining core membership area of Michigan.
