Education:
- Bachelor of Engineering (BEng)
- Master of Engineering (MEng)
- Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
- Master of Philosophy (MPhil)
The specialist strengths of the department of mechanical engineering and aeronautics are in Aero-Engineering. The BEng and MEng degree courses specific to the automotive sector have only been in place for three years and include a specialisation in aerodynamics. With the recent arrival of Dr Russell Lockett, the university possesses a new research capability in combustion and emissions.
Research:
- Formula 1 motor sport aerodynamics development through computational interactivity with digital and analogue wind tunnels
- Combustion processes in diesel and petrol engines
- Electric car design project
Equipment available includes:
- Computational engineering systems front ended to a Cray J-90 computer
- Rolling road facility for flow visualisation in a water tunnel
- 6 Low speed wind tunnels, the chief 'workhorse' of which is 1 m x 1 m with up to 50 m/s flow speed
- New rigs designed for laser PIV measurement related to combustion processes
Contacts:
- Professor David J Peake, Head of Centre for Aeronautics
- Dr Frank Henry, Head of CFD for Aeronautics
- Dr Russell Lockett, Head of Engine Research.
All these draw upon staff from the aeronautical and mechanical staff base, 13 in all, dealing with CAD, robotics, acoustics, structures, thermodynamics, combustion and laser measurements.
Clients
Peugeot, Honda, Rolls Royce Motors and Shell Oil in research projects including enhanced downforce and estimated drag in aerodynamic work, combustion of rich fuels from engines at high pressures and optimal mixture formation in Honda's stratified charge VTECE engine.
University Collaboration:
The university does not as yet, collaborate in automotive education or research although the potential of this is being currently explored.
